Chloe Speaks To Seminole Heights

Chloe Speaks To Seminole Heights

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to address some of the concerns of the Seminole Heights neighborhood. I thoroughly enjoyed the exchange of ideas that were presented at the party hosted by and at the home of Liz Taylor and Phil Compton. This particular event, attended by many Seminole Heights residents, helped to generate the responses for this writing.

Let me assure you, I will be your fulltime County Commissioner. I quit my job as Founder, CEO & President of the Community to Develop Corporations (CDC) of Tampa to pursue this office paying $11,000 less than my salary at the CDC. So you can see, it is not about money with me. It is about improving the quality of life, not only for East Tampa, but for all of District 3.

I encourage you to not judge me by what other elected officials have not done for you. I have a proven track record of achieving measurable results that have positively impacted the community. My travels throughout the country have enabled me to see first hand how best practices can be replicated by leveraging private/public partnerships that resulted in bringing over $30 million to our community. These projects included affordable housing, commercial development, youth programs, job creation and businesses owned by our neighbors. None of these initiatives were race, gender, class, religious, or sexual preference exclusive. I want to do for all of District 3 what I did for East Tampa.

More specifically, Seminole Heights has needs that are of concern to me:
* Florida Avenue & Nebraska Avenue These are main thoroughfares that are in need of immediate attention. They are in disrepair and are not pedestrian friendly. They need sidewalks, angle parking, and non-rush hour parking on the street. Businesses flourish when pedestrians walk. Leadership is needed to advance this agenda on a local and state level. I will make this a priority.

* Safe Neighborhoods You will have to be my eyes and ears because you see what happens on a daily basis. My job will be to make sure your concerns are addressed and receive the attention they deserve. I plan to have my aides attend your meetings on a quarterly basis and I want to maintain a continuous dialogue to develop a plan of action. I am no stranger to drug marches, community cleanups and taking back our neighborhoods brick by brick, block by block, and person by person. I realize this will require city/county collaboration because of the overlapping responsibilities of the elected officials representing you. However, I firmly believe we cannot continue to operate in a vacuum when safety and quality of life issues are at stake. Leadership is lacking in this regard.

*Transportation I want to serve as your Hillsborough County Commission representative on the Hartline Board to address funding issues to ensure efficient and effective service. Without a good transit system, people can obtain employment but still lack the means to get there. When I travel to areas of the country that have light rail and/or mass transit systems, the economies are more vibrant and thriving. Consequently, corporations are relocating to those communities at a faster rate than in Hillsborough County and the economies of the other communities and its residents are benefiting economically. Consider this formula:
Sound transportation systems = An infusion of jobs $$$ into the local economy

* High Taxes As communities revitalize and taxes increase, it is imperative to develop innovative measures to help with the infrastructure needs for the communities from which the taxes were generated. The Main Street Programs in St. Pete and Sarasota are excellent examples of reinvesting tax dollars back into the neighborhood. There are countless measures throughout the country that bear witness to the value of thinking outside the box but leadership is needed to ask the question, What box? Again, best practices dont require reinventing the wheel but a car in motion without a driver is destined for a wreck. I will lead the charge to work with other elected officials to ensure a portion of the tax revenue is returned to the community for the most pressing needs.

* Economic Development I bring 14 years of experience in community development specializing in commercial development. Under my leadership, I was able to convince Suncoast Credit Union to locate in Seminole Heights (1920 E Hillsborough Ave). It will open within the month. Also, the Urban Enterprise Center located at 1920 E Hillsborough Avenue will bring over 100 jobs within one year to Seminole Heights. This project leveraged local, state, and federal dollars totaling $3 million. As you can see, I have been working to bring commercial development to Seminole Heights long before my candidacy. I dont just show up for ribbon cuttings, I have a proven track record of creating ribbon cuttings. As your Hillsborough County Commissioner, I will continue to champion economic development for all of District 3.

* Gay Rights I deliberately left this topic for last because I want to make sure these thoughts are indelibly written in your permanent memory bank. I WILL NEVER DISCRIMINATE AGAINST ANYONE AND WILL FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL PEOPLE ALWAYS TO BE FREE TO LIVE THEIR OWN LIFESTYLE AS THEY SO DESIRE. Because I have been discriminated against as a female, as a Black person, and as a woman in a non-traditional work environment (parole/probation officer) I am especially sensitive to why gay rights are so important. The most painful memories of my life are a result of the discrimination I endured as a young girl while integrating the public school system in Hillsborough County. Even while pursuing this office, preconceived notions have led to discriminatory remarks towards me because I am the wife of a pastor. Some may consider this topic inappropriate, but the truth of the matter is gays and lesbians are family members, neighbors, church members, pastors, elected officials and are not going away. Gay bashing is not anything you will ever have as a legitimate concern with me. I will disassociate myself with anything that contributes to the erosion of your rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The late Coretta Scott King was a clarion for social justice and very verbal when it came to the rights of the LGBT Community stating that: I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice, she said. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King, Jr. said, Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. I appeal to anyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.s dream to make room at the table of brother and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people. Like Coretta Scott King, I too believe that the LGBT communitys quest for civil rights and expectance is equally noteworthy as is the struggle of any people.

It is my sincere desire that this writing will serve as the catalyst to generate more discussion regarding the concerns yours and mine for making Seminole Heights one of the best places to live, work, own a business, and raise a family. I will do my part but I need your help. Please vote for me, Chloe Coney, Hillsborough County Commission District 3 on September 5, 2006.

Sincerely,
Chloe Coney

Very well said. You have my vote! One thing I can say Ms. Coney is the residents of Seminole Heights are hard working fighters fighting for a better, safer, cleaner neighborhood. We are looking for a city/county leader that will roll up their sleeves and work with us to make this the best neighborhood in the City of Tampa. That said, we will also be the group that will never been silenced, we will hold you to your campaign promises. We will expect follow-through and we will praise the leader that accomplishes these things. I appreciate and respect you for taking the time to write a detailed letter "going on record" of your position on the many important topics that affect our neighborhood and quality of life. Again, best of luck, you have 2 votes in this Seminole Heights Home.

Here, here! You have two more votes from Tampa Heights! Ms. Coney, you are very well-spoken, educated, and enlightened. As I watch our country and our county continually being lowered by closed-minded hate mongers, I am encouraged by your words.

It's easy to campaign on hate. It's harder to take strong positions in a climate that is anti-speach and anti-taking-of-positions other than that of the mainstream. I am very confident that you will be rewarded for your courage and I know you will represent us well!

Anon 9:30 I second your comments - very well said. I appreciate Chloe taking the time in addressing the concerns mentioned in this neighborhood blog.

White has given of his time for the neighborhood on city council but I do not feel that he is willing to push boundaries and look at things in a different light to get them done. A know evil is not necessarily a good thing - more of the same is not something I am willing to take - be it city or county representation. I just came back from Portland and I saw first hand how mass transit and light rail can reinvent the city and the economy - I've had enough of elected officials sidestepping the issue - we may have already passed the point of no return.

Our household gives her 2 votes.

Sounds like everyone is saying the same thing "Vote for Kevin White" because he has the experience as an elected official with your neighborhood issues whether you had a chance to see him or not. If you check the record he has attended meetings day and night on Thursdays (Cable 15) in city council chambers for over 31/2 years, successfully resolving issues in your immediate neighborhoods and the city as a whole.

Now we want to “Throw the baby out with the bath water”? My how soon we forget the opportunities Mr. White has provided the neighborhoods voices to be heard and resolutions to their issues in such a short period of time. Why wouldn’t Mr. White want to continue his efforts and hard work to get problems solved at the County level, if not at least try now that he is seasoned and has a clear and polished vision? Personal experience as an elected official Trumps a “Hat Trick any Day” Tried to get an answer at city hall lately? Have not your neighborhood issues been heard at city hall by Tampa City Councilman White?

Now we want to say that Giddens Park wasn’t renovated? Star Bucks is still a dream? Historical Preservation doesn’t happen? Crime is not going down? We want change and we want it now? Why? Tampa City Councilman White has served us well.

Kevin White has made a change in our neighborhoods and his voting record on neighborhood issues speaks for itself. The things that matter, like rezoning hearings, wet zoning hearings, plan amendments, code enforcment, appeals, appointments, public hearings, etc. Remember “Not in my back yard”? Well it is your back yard because Kevin White is there and asking each one of us to vote on September 5, 2006 for Kevin White County Commission District 3. I leave you with this thought:

“A bird in the hand is worth two hats in the bush”

Besides Chloe has baggage and it does not correlate with her record in Hillsborough County. You be the Judge. Kevin Cares and is naturally Honest.

The Real Proven Track Record of Chloe Coney. Don’t read the paper see the public record for a public position!

After reviewing Chloe Coney’s Public Records. Vote for Kevin White on (Tuesday) September 5, 2006 for a proven track record of continued commitment not just some “rhetoric”.

Besides Coney’s platform is really directed at Rev. Thomas Scott, the sitting Hillsborough County Commissioner for District 3. The issues Coney raises are directed to Scott’s past 10 years of representation. Mr. Kevin White is a Tampa City Councilman that is campaigning for an open seat, because the existing Commissioner Rev. Scott is term limited. In case you didn’t know.

"You be the Judge. Kevin Cares and is naturally Honest. "

you be the judge - clothing consultant - italian suits - Kevin White is honest because he got caught. He did not know that hiding his clothing expenses under consultng was illegal - then why do it??? Yah - that will get my vote.

Anonymous said...

Check out Kevin's website so you won't make a MISTAKE. Kevin made the MISTAKE (yeah, right) of listing his clothing ($500 Italian suits, $65 raw silk ties and $125 slacks as legitimate campaign expenses (give me a break) from Robbins Consulting. He had the nerve to use an address other than the store's address to further cover his tracks. These transactions appear on his campaign reports not once, not twice, but on THREE different occasions with the amounts escalating to...$500, $1600 and finally $4000 = $6100.00. Come on, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going on with this guy. I question everything he has ever touched. Unfortunately, he had me fooled and I CONTRIBUTED $500.00 to his campaign. How do you think that makes me feel? Everyday my customers come in and poke fun at me. Forget me, how do you think his children feel? I guess he can explain it to them with the old adage of do what I say, not what I do. The yard sign is no longer in front of my business and I voted early. I suggest you vote early, too. Don't make a MISTAKE. Vote for Chloe Coney.

Hip, Hip hooray for Chloe Coney. I am gay and I could not wait for my partner to read Chloe's letter. We cannot believe we have had a jewel like Chloe Coney within our grasp this long. We are voting early for CHLOE CONEY today. When we read the part about what Coretta Scott King said, we cried. It is if Dr. King was speaking from the grave through his widow.

Chloe gets my vote, my husband's vote and I am calling all of my neighbors. This lady, hat and all, and I don't even like hats, is a class act. How refreshing to have an honest, open and intelligent person with her background offering themself for public servive without MONEY being the incentive. Whew, what a relief. My confidence in the process is on the upswing.

Chloe will fight for us. Hopefully we can get rid of some of the other Ralph Hughes commissioners so that she is not fighting alone.

To my knowledge Kevin, a consumate politician, has had little to do with the reduction of crime in Tampa, and I guess annon 1:59 you don't use Gidden's park. It is still unfinished four years later. But finished or not it has nothing to do with Kevin White or City Council. I admit he has shown up and voted and tried. However, his "feeling" for the neighborhood he moved into because he had to, has never been very strong. "Showing Up" to shake hands. have your picture taken or make an impression does not mean you embrace your community. It means you are laying the bricks for your next political step.

The thing I like about Chloe, hat or not, is the hands on. Might not be perfect or accomplish everything she wishes to. but I have absolutely no doubt she will be in there working, heart and soul.

Her presence in the campain could not be more welcome or refreshing.

Kevin is always taking credit for everything that the city council has ever approved. The thing that I recall him being most vocal about was voting himself a raise. He was elected to city council after accepting illegal campaign contributions.

"But White says he had 'no earthly idea' of who might have sent him an illegal campaign contribution. 'I knew absolutely nothing about them except they were fiercely interested in developing the Tampa Heights area,' White said. "Whoever wanted to write me a check wrote me a check.' "

Sound familiar? Kevin makes so many honest mistakes. Join me in voting for Chloe.

You can always count on Kevin if you get a parking ticket - he will go straight to the officer that wrote the ticket and talk to them (Sat -St Pete Times - Tampa & State section). Kevin (according to the article) "said he believes his interceding with police ought to reflect positively on his political campaign. I think it shows more of a commitment to my constituents." Me thinks true if you are his goddaughter.

I'll call on my way back from Ybor tonight after I get pulled over and see how long it takes him to come to my assistance.

Kevin White should take the high road and withdraw from the race. He is an embarrassment to himself, the position he holds, his fellow council members, his constituents, and all who ever voted and believed in him. I was duped and voted for him.I have tried to defend him about asking for a pay raise, jumping from city council less than one year after being elected to a four year term to run for county commission but the series of events that have taken place recently - campaign funds paying for his wardrobe, creating a paper trail to deceive the public about the origina of the funds for his wardrobe and police interference involving a relative (?)are inexcusable. I have tried to give him EVERY benefit of the doubt but he just won't quit shooting himself in the butt. My vote, my wife's vote, our 3 children and all of our friends are voting for CHLOE CONEY.

Kevin is pathetic. He makes my stomach turn. Another greedy politician that doesn't give a damn about anybody but himself. I haven't voted since Jimmy Carter and I went to vote early today. I bet you can guess who got my vote.

While I respect Kevin for the time he gave to our district...and yes there were some good things that he accomplished, I have to say that tomorrow is a new day and I want it to bring more new ideas and progress at a faster pace. I don't think Kevin is the guy to bring us this. I am afraid it is time for a new voice to lead us on the next part of our quest. I had not made up my mind til recently, when I read about the sex offenders, I agree where are our district leaders to fight for our children and families. I personally think we should all be screaming about this. Not one leader has spoken out and done anything to help our neighborhood close this case. Well, there was one leader I heard speak...Harold Scott...God shut him up!

MR. White has been a good councilman. He's involved in the district. When Ybor City faced a problem of kids running wild on 7th ave, Kevin White was in the spot working with police and the community to calm things down . later creating an ordinance to protect our kids from harms way.

regarding the church on North Street - it was an obvious case to deny the zoning requested. If I remember correctly ALL of the city council voted to deny the request - Kevin did not lead the charge but I do give him credit for dressing down the minister regarding their claim of racial discrimination. I would expect that of ANY elected official.

It is no longer enough to run with the the pack - it is time for agressive change.

Candidate had rocky police career
A City Council hopeful violated the chase policy and was reprimanded during his four years with the Police Department.
By KATHRYN WEXLER, Times Staff Writer

© St. Petersburg Times, published March 20, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA -- Kevin White, candidate for City Council District 5, is running hard on his experience as a cop.

A photo of White as a young Tampa police officer in uniform graces his campaign literature, along with promises to fight crime.

But White's four-year career with the Tampa Police Department ended in 1994 under a cloud of ambiguity.

Six months earlier, he chased an armed burglary suspect, whose car slammed into a van, sending the van's driver hurtling through the passenger window. Police officials decided White had no valid reason for the pursuit and that he should have stopped to help the badly injured crash victim instead of continuing the chase.

The victim sued based on White's actions, and the city ultimately paid $85,000.

White quit the department before police Chief Bennie Holder had decided on repercussions.

He submitted a letter of resignation on April 10, 1994, two weeks after Police Department attorney Kirby Rainsberger confirmed in writing that White had violated the chase policy.

On Wednesday, White, 38, said his resignation had to do with getting a better job, not with the chase.

"I was never worried about discipline," White said from his office at St. Pete Jeep Chrysler Plymouth, where he is finance director.

Although White received generally positive reviews as an officer, the unauthorized pursuit was one of a string of problems, according to police records.

Two months before White resigned, officials determined he had abused his authority by threatening to put a man in jail if he didn't pay White $500 after they had been in a car crash. White received a letter of counseling for that violation. On Wednesday, White said he had done nothing wrong.

During his four years with the department, officials found fault with two other car chases in which he was involved. In all, he garnered three letters of counseling and two written reprimands.

White was assigned to the Quad Squad, an aggressive troop that patrolled the drug-ridden area of Robles Park -- "the best job I ever had," White said.

A supervisor wrote in 1992 that White was "a good, hard-working officer," and in a review in 1993, said he "makes every attempt to be helpful to the community."

In his current battle for the east Tampa council seat against Bernadine White-King, White has won endorsements from the police union and the firefighters union.

Kevin Durkin, spokesman for the West Central Florida Police Benevolent Association, said Wednesday he was aware of the chase.

"I'm familiar with it," Durkin said. "There were people here who knew about it."

White said the critically injured motorist in the car chase on Sept. 30, 1993, did not require his aid, as officials later determined.

"The person who was ejected had several people helping him and I was apprehending the suspect at the time," White said.

The settlement was one of the larger ones for wrongful pursuits, said Michael McNabb, manager for the city's risk management department.

In the incident involving the man who accused White of coming to his house to shake him down for $500, White denied making threats.

"That was a guy that hit my car," White said. "He told me to come by and he would pay my deductible because he didn't have insurance. I happened to go by after work, in uniform."

The victim's claims of intimidation were substantiated by an officer who was riding with White when he went to the victim's house, according to the police report.

When White retired his uniform, he took a position with Second Chance Finance, a used car dealership.

"I had a job that was going to pay me five times more," White said. "That's why I left, to better my family situation."

Michael Krizmanich, owner of Second Chance Finance, had high praise for his manager of two years.

"He was a very fine young man," Krizmanich said. "I would love to see him win."

White's resignation letter requested that he be appointed as a Tampa police reserve officer. That didn't happen.

Let me know when the blog debate is over so we can go back to voting. Did not expect the enthusiasm that is being generated to be so negative, but we guess that is Tampa Florida Style. Is there anything else?

In the meanwhile we are voting for Kevin White a people person, businessman and neighbor. Someone that listens and is truly concerned and committed about working for you and your neighborhoods and the residents of District 3!!! Thanks.

Neither candidate came from an affluent background. Each has a family. Each had financial problems at one time or another. Each took care of their financial obligations. We don't need any more URLs that don't work. Most of us know how to search the public records and the SPTimes archives, as well. My husband and I are proud to have voted early for Chloe Coney! Her accomplishments in the community far outweigh any blemishes on her credit report.

Public records will not determine who gets my vote. I am insulted that anybody would stoop that low. Does anybody remember Watergate? A word to the wise...Dirty tricks will come back to trap the trickster.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for mentioning the dirty tricks about public records. I am 58 years old, had financial problems 10 years ago and now own and operate a successful business in Seminole Heights. I see many of you everyday. I don't think it would be fair to make my public records a part of any discussion regarding why I should or should not own a business. Likewise, I don't think it is fair for either candidate to have to defend something that could happen to anybody during hard times. Hopefully, we are mature enough to let this not interfere with casting our vote.

Dirty tricks will not determine the winner in this race, so get over it.

Ditto, ditto, ditto to the last two entries above. Anybody resorting to dirty tricks is running SCARED and is desperate for something to pull them out of the hole. Any ideas on who has dug a hole for HIMSELF?

It is time that the residents of District 3 stand up for what is right. A County Commissioner who displays honesty, integrity, and ethical values. Kevin White continues to show us all that he is the complete opposite of those characteristics. Any elected official who will purposely deceive the public while commiting fraud by disgusing the purchase of clothing as consulting fees, making up a fake name, and address of the company speaks very poorly of his character. I encourage all residents of Seminole Heights and District 3 to vote early for Chloe Coney!

I just finished reading this section starting with Chloe Coney's letter to the blog posted through 8/2/06 at 11:37pm. Chloe's letter is powerful and shows such forward thinking - something we have lacked in city and county representation. Regretably, I voted for Kevin and had high hopes that he would serve Seminole Heights well. I am saddened to say he has not only disappointed the voters who placed their confidence in him but he must be feeling pretty low right now because his political future is over. He represents all that is bad in public servants and should not be rewarded by advancing his political career on lies, deception and poor moral character.

I am voting early for Chloe Coney.

I voted this morning. It was hard, but I did give my vote to Chloe. I hope she does not let us down.

Ms. Coney's letter is impressive. It was direct. It was clear. She is actually listening to all of District 3. That hasn't happened since the late Sylvia Rodriguez-Kimball held that seat.

I was skeptical of Ms. Coney. I have not been impressed with most of the quality of political candidates coming out of east Tampa during my years in Tampa.

In my 7 years on SSHCA and OSHNA neighborhood boards, I found representation of Seminole Heights concerns inadequate at best in both County Commission district 3 and City Council district 5. On a personal basis I have found the anti-gay rhetoric, homphobia, or general indifference to concerns of the gay/lesbian community to be hypocritical.

MS. CONEY'S LETTER HAS CHANGED MY VOTE AND MY PARTNER'S VOTE ON SEPTEMBER 5TH! I hope it is a true representation of her candor. She is welcome to plant a or two sign in my front yard.

This blog segment is entitled "Chloe Speaks to Seminole Heights." Posts about KW are negative in relationship to the topic and irrelevant. There is a segment called "Kevin's Suits." These comments would be appropriate there.

Went to Starbucks yesterday and could not believe the talk about the election. From all I heard, Chloe Coney has really made a good impression.

Semonole Heights has been represented by Kevin White well. At least another 60 voters have already voted for Kevin White today. Thanks, Kevin for taking the Seminole Heights PUNCH IN THE FACE OF REALITY. And ride your good will to VTCTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin White has done his job. Nothing special. Showing up, making decisions, voting. Doing his job. No jest, no fire. Lack luster and uninvolved. Perhaps not a bad vote, just a dull one. Chlkoe has fire. She really cares. To her it is not just a job. Love this about her

I can't believe how much Chloe has accomplished as a private citizen. We need to all be as activist as she is. We shouldn't settle for the status quo.

Do any of you Chloe supporters know what the "M. L. K. Unsung Hero Award for Community Service," that Ms. Coney mentions on her campaign literature is about? Just curious. I had never heard of it.

The Unsung Hero’s Award is from the Tampa Organization of Black Affairs. The award goes to citizens who foster inclusion and success in others in the comminity.

Has everyone received the mailings that Mr. White has been sending out? What alot of FLUFF!! Quoting these no-brainers as if they were huge accomplishments...Voting YES to restore Cuscaden Pool, Voting yes to allow the Centro Asturiano Hospital into Assisted Living facilities and working with MONTEL??? As if this were some good name dropping??? In the mean time, has everyone noticed how Mr. White has hire some guy off the street to go around and pull up all of the Chloe Coney signs?? And come on....that 20-year-old photo of him in Blue and photos of him attending a ground breaking?? Is this fluff stuff supposed to impress anyone?? I am MUCH more impressed by the direct communication that Ms. Coney has had with us in her letter to the blogger.

You are not the only one watching Kevin White's propaganda. Ad Watch in the Tampa Tribune's Metro Section (9/2/06) has a very interesting analysis of Kevin's ads. Seems like the old boy has been fibbing again. Shams on you Kevin. Do you think we are not on to your games by now? Shame on you.

THE END OF THE KEVIN WHITE BASHING BY SEMINOLE HEIGHTS BEGINS AT 7:00PM TOMORROW NIGHT. WHY SHOULD HE FEEL OBLIGATED TO HELP US WHEN SEMINOLE HEIGHTS TRIED TO DESTROY HIM AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND HUMAN BEING. WE ARE MOVING OUT OF THIS NEIGHBORHOOD NEXT MONTH.

THANKS NEIGHBORS!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out http://eqfl.org/issues/votersguide.php and select "Hillsborough." Mr. White didn't even see fit to respond to Equality Florida's survey, despite the fact taht he wants to represent Seminole Heights and Tampa Heights, areas with a strong gay population. Chloe Coney, on the other hand, did respond and she understands the community that she desires to represent.

Kevin White has proven himself to be a corrupt man with the suit scandal. How many other acts of corruption did he get away with while a member of City Council. Make your voice heard tomorrow: vote against corruption and vote against those who are not for equality for everyone.
