Cappy's Pizza

Our Cappy's gets a write-up in today's Friday Extra!

Eating Through Thick And Thin

"If a lack of available parking signals a restaurant's success, then Cappy's Pizza might be destined for greatness.
Sitting pretty beside the recently closed Covivant Gallery, the eatery competes for minimal spaces with Ruben's Auto Repair Shop and residents of nearby South Street.
But that's the price of doing business in Seminole Heights......"

This is not a particularly good review. "Soggy crust", "Slow service", "no parking", "no credit cards". I haven't gone there yet, but now I am not sure that I will. How unfortunate for SH. I hope to see the day when we have a restaurant to really be proud of. Maybe Cappy's will heed the constructive criticism and make the necessary changes. I am still too happy with Ybor Pizza and ABC Pizza to make the change. When someone notices things getting better there, please put it up on the blog.

I live around the corner from Cappy's and have ordered take out 4 times in the past 2 weeks. Each and every time, the pizza has been very good. I am a very picky eater and don't give food praise easily.

I liked this place when it was on S Howard and I don't notice a difference in the quality at the SH location.

Every trip I've made to 'our' Cappy's (about 5 now) has been fantastic. I had none of the problems listed in the review.
It's unfortunate when a review is done, that it's just the one time and the restaurant's reputation rests on everything that happens in one visit. Everyone has down or off days. I'm glad the reviewer came back a second time, it was a better story, ultimately.

Cappy's is awesome, end of story.

This beeyotch doesn't know jack.

Long live Cappy's!

Go figure. The city of Tampa allows a businesss to open with inadequate parking...NO, tell me it is not so!!! Then, they rent a grass lot for parking and the city does not require that they put a hard surface down, again, tell me it is not so.

I would suspect that Cappy's was able to get their CO (cet of Occ) because they could show aditional parking within 600 feet of their location. That is a doable zoning option.

Regarding the review - we all knew about no CC - they did not do that in SOH and do not here - there has been plenty blog about that!

I don't have any complaints about the joint -I' ve been 4-5 times and enjoyed - but wish they would expand the menu - I not a every week pizza kinda guy - I know that's what they are but I don't always want to leave the 'hood to eat out.

What is Elizabeth's projected opening date???

Cappy's is great!
We are very lucky to have them here. The menu is perfectly fine, ...the NY thin AND Chicago style pizza, 3 different kinds of salad, calzone (yum) and breadsticks, too. Their crust is awesome, crisp and tasty. Also, plenty of options for beverages, nice beer selection! We try not to eat-out very often, but make a point to have Cappy's weekly. (dine-in or take-out)
I think the album cover menus are cute, as well as the decor. The outdoor patio is going to be great with the weather getting cooler.
Fortunately for us, we are close enough to walk and don't have to worry about parking. We like to walk off our pizza.
:)
All I can say is... if you don't go, you're missing out. I only wish SH had more businesses like Cappy's.
Oh, and I really enjoy the music they usually have playing... lots of 80's!

Don't let the review keep you away. It's a cool place to kick back and have good pizza. I'm glad they came to our area and sorry they didn't get a better review.

I love that Cappy's is here. It looks good, it's fun. However, I would have to say the pizza, in my opinion, is so-so. Now, the Greek salad - it rocks! I would go back just for that. And I will go back, just to support a decent place in S.H. But, if I want good pizza, I'll go to Stephanno's.

We have done take out on several occassions and must say that they, and ABC on Hillsborough, are the only ones that can get the crispy crust just right. And both have Greek salads that are out of this world.

In addtion, ABC has an Italian Grinder that is awesome!

I never had occasion to try Cappy's down south, so I can't compare then and now. I wouldn't call the service slow, but laid back. If you're in a hurry then perhaps it might not be what you're looking for, but at the same time, if you want to bring a small group and spend a couple of hours yakking over pizza and beer, I don't think they'd rush you out either. And it's a great place to hang out with killer tunes and quirky decor. I love the movie starlet photos and any place with a propeller on the wall has to get bonus points :-).
The pizza is good, the crust has never been anywhere near soggy. If anything I've had it just a bit overdone a couple of times.
Now that I'm back from Baja, I'm anxious to stop in. I've been almost three weeks without pizza, and the DT's are starting to kick in.

I agree with the review. the crust sucks and the sauce is bland. maybe one day there will be good food here.

My husband and I went to Cappy's after reading the reviews in this blog. We ordered the vegetarian thin crust style pizza. Neither one of us could finish our first slice, it was that nasty. The sauce in the pizza was so overwhelmingly tangy it was inedible. My husband said it tasted rotten. The pizza had so much cheese that grease pooled on the top of it. When the waitress came to check on us we told her we couldn't eat it so she took it and they didn't charge us, which was cool. I liked the decor and atmosphere but this was the worst pizza I have ever had in my life. We ended up going to The Grass Root. We are not going back to Cappy's.

Ordered the "Cappy" Chicago style - while eating my first "and only" slice I started to worry that I had been given a "Veggy" by mistake, then I identified meat, lone slice of pepperoni a a tiny square of might have been ham. My overall view - the pie that I got made Pizza Hut start to look good. The greek salad was solid - the pizza scored 2 forks out of 10 with me and my friends. I will try the New York style before I give up.

sounds like this place should change their name to CRAPPY'S

Been to Cappy's in SH Twice. To us, both times pizza seemed overwhelmed in cheese, and extremely skimpy on veggies per slice. Dark finishing made the ambience feel cold in some ways, nice old fashion refrigerator but wasn't expecting a scolding from staffer for just admiring it up close and personal. Seemed over priced for the quality of finished product, quantity of veggies to make up the product and "attitude" shown (especially having to ask twice for check). So, twice was enough for us.

It's quite obvious that opinions cover the entire spectrum. I would say that making broad statements such as the "Crappy's" comment based on a few negative comments is just being inflammatory. Perhaps it's luck or perhaps it's just different tastes, but there seems to be just as many good reviews as bad so I would say that everyone should try it for themselves and those that don't like it just leaves more parking for those of us who do. They, like Starbuck's, haven't seemed to want for patronage since they opened.

Never knew that a simple pizza joint could be dissed so hard. It's f#cking pizza people!

What is the story with Ybor? I heard they sold, yet, nothing has changed over there. Is the new owner keeping everything as is?

I have made several visits to Cappys. The pizza was OK, but not great. Greek salad was good, but not great. I don't use much cash anymore, so the no CC thing is inconvenient. I find it hard to believe that any business today is cash only, but oh well. I froze sitting in the restaurant, and heard the same comment made by others there. Service was slow, and when I had a takeout order it was incomplete. I think ABC has tastier food and better service, although I don't care much for the interior; it can get very loud in there.

I love Cappy's pizza!! They are close to my house and by far the BEST pizza I've ever had! I encourage EVERYONE to try it for themselves. Service however is another story. I would agree that the servers are a little rude. I've been in there plenty of times and I've never had a great experience with any of them. I guess when you are as busy as they are, taking care of the repeat customers doesn't really matter.
