Last dinner and last art?

From a reader:
"I wanted to let you know I was at Viva La Frida last night and they announced it was their last night open! As we ate dinner they were throwing the food inventory out, the walls were already bare. It is sad, the place was so unique and so full of energy, so typical Seminole Heights. It was a sad dinner, also because of Covivant closing soon down the road. "

On the subject of Covivant:

Hot Ticket: There's still time to catch a Covivant exhibit St. Petersburg Times - St. Petersburg,FL,USA...

"Oh, no! Covivant, the plucky Tampa gallery that balances on the edge, literally and artistically, may close. Long-time owner Carrie Mackin is making noises about moving to New York and may or may not find someone else to run it. If that's the case, Seminole Heights will lose an important cultural component and the Tampa Bay area will lose a vibrant arts venue that has often exhibited the kind of work usually seen only in big-city spots like New York"

"100 Smacks . . . Or More!" is Covivant's annual fundraiser, not designed to convey a focused viewpoint or showcase an artist. Instead, several dozen artists hang work that is mostly modestly priced, between $100 and $500"

If you want to actually buy anything at the 100 Smacks event - get there early. The last time we went, the pickings were incredibly slim, and we didn't think we'd gotten there that late. Still a great trip for a browse, and I suppose that's great for Carrie and the artists that things sell. I was just personally disappointed as there were several artists showing that we liked a lot.

It's sad about Frida's. But if it were profitable someone would have bought it. So maybe it for the better, I just hope it doesn't go back to being a car lot.

With the increase in property value(taxes) being passed on to business in rent I think we are going to see a business gentrfrication(spelling?) I don't know if the artist / shops are going to make it.

Good news is a matter of opinion, not so good news IMHO.
