Review on Grassroot Organic Restaurant

From the SE Seminole Heights email list:

" Hi everyone! Just want to let you all know about a new Vegan/Vegetarian/Raw Food restaurant that just opened up recently on the corner of Florida and Columbus Avenue. Its called Grassroot Organic Restaurant. I finally got a chance to get over there today and try it and the food was delicious. Its a very off-beat, relaxing atmosphere. The food is healthy, but, don't think it doesn't taste awesome. We had the vegan key lime pie today, and you never would have known it was vegan. They also have a juice bar. They are closed on Monday and Tuesday. The website is www.thegrassrootlife.com

Link to the restaurant isn't working. I got the URL off the page source though. Just thought you'd like to know. :)

Not knowing what "raw" means with no explanation on the menu, I ordered an $8 bowl of Miso soup, which arrived cold and tasteless about 10 minutes later. When I told the waitress that this wasn’t what I expected, she seemed put out to say the least and her overall attitude completely ruined my experience. For the first time since high school (a long time ago) I was snubbed. Perhaps this food is great for the body but what about the mind? I won’t return based on simple arrogance and the fact that not many Americans eat this healthy- perhaps educating your patrons as a new business will help ensure your success. As her shoulder cleared my sight, I see she left the bill on the table for the full amount after I did the apologizing. What was I thinking? I’d like to think they were just having a bad day. Perhaps my $8 bucks will help add the extra text to the recycled paper menu.

Just tried the food there last Wednesday. As a lifelong (now and forever) meat eater, I have to say what I had there was delicious.

It was a mock hamburger with mock bacon. I also had the Guac and chips (delicious) and some falafel (sp?). All very, very good.

Few issues (although they won't stop me from trying the place again): One of the people in our party ordered a salad. Although it said nothing about nuts on the menu, it came with nuts. Problem is, the person who ordered it is allergic to nuts and swells up from the inside out when she eats them. (She caught it in time.)

The waitress/owner was a bit smug about it when we asked her if it had nuts. And a bit more smug when we said our party couldn't eat it.

The lady was also smug when my wife started eating the falafel sandwich with a fork and knife. After an odd look and hand motion, she told my wife, "most people eat it with their hands." We felt like we had to apologize.

Two more issues were that 2 of the 4 people in the party got their meals about 10-15 minutes earlier than the other 2. Odd timing to say the least. Also, 3 of the four of us had an eye burning sensation in the place -- presumably due to onions being cut or the like.

However -- all that considered, the food over-rides the issues this time. It was delicious and priced right.

The inside of the building is clean and funky, too. And the other guest were very friendly.

I'll attribute it to a bad night for the restaurant (this time) as we got there right before closing.

If the service issues resume -- they will certainly drop down my list dramatically.

I say try them out for yourself at least once.
