Chelsea gets stop signs

According to neighbors who are watching the work being performed, the intersection of Chelsea and 12th, the site of many accidents, is getting made into a 4 way stop.

A comment from the SESH emai list:

"After YEARS and YEARS of requesting that the Traffic Dept do something to calm traffic in the area, they have finally decided to intall a 4-way stop at the intersection of Chelsea and 12th Streets. This will do much to slow traffic down on 12th Street and almost eliminate the possiblity of accidents at that particular intersection. It appears that Mr. LaMotte really pays attention to an issue when he is personally accompanied by a city council member to view the problem. I'd like to thank Rose Ferlita for taking this problem seriously and deciding to put it on her list of important things to get accomplished.

HOWEVER, we are still left with serious traffic issues in the neighborhood. Although the 4-way stop will slow traffic down on the southern stretch of 12th between Osborne and MLK, it will do NOTHING to slow things down along the Chelsea Street RACEWAY, nor along the northern stretch of 12th street. The original cause of the accidents at the corner of 12th and Chelsea has been caused by drivers speeding down Chelsea from Nebraska to 12th street and not being able to stop in time, ending up in the middle of 12th street instead of at the stop sign.

Also it is still almost impossible to walk down 12th to the park without having to move off of the pavement due to drivers honking at you to get out of the way. The same along Chelsea S. "

The traffic on Ola is cut-through to avoid the Florida/Hillsborough intersection (and the I-275/Nebraska/Hillsborough/Central mess).

Idlewild ave in Hampton Terrace, along with Henry and Powhatan are straight shots from 15th to Nebraska. Rushhour traffic zips down these streets at high rates of speed due to the totall lack of traffic control. Idlewild sees over 1200 cars a day (some days as high as 1600) with speeds as high as 50mph. Unlike Ola, we have no sidewalks so pedestrians share the road with speeding autos.

The city continues to use the 80-percentile rule in a flawed manner that essentially says a 25mph street with 50 cars going 50mph is a "hazard" but that same street with the same 50 cars going 50 and an additional 200 going 30 is not a hazard. The use of this rule is either gross stupidity or an intentional dodge of responsibility.

You can park cars on the street to force traffic to slow down. That's the only solution the city has left us.

Wilder between Florida Ave and Central is also a raceway. Many motorists use Wilder to avoid the road split on Florida a block south where southbound traffic is routed to Highland. They can avoid two traffic lights by using Wilder.

I haven't bothered with requesting a traffic study after watching the futility in Hampton Terrace. Maybe it is time to unite and take this on as a larger group.

The drag racing on Wilder is out of control. It goes on 24 hours a day but is worst in the hours after HHS ends classes through rush hour.

I have seen a few near misses in the year that I have been here. With all the, school related, foot traffic, it is inevitable that there will be an accident on Wilder due to excessive speed.

We can't park in the street, on Wilder, as the road is marked no parking so big trucks can access HHS.

I live on Broad - - Yup just down from the Alpine. Not only do people race down the sgreet but half of them are drunk or at least working on it. UGH! Since I use my front porch a lot, I have taken to calling in license plates to TPD. It doesn't do any good, but it makes me feel better. I have called in the school bus and a plumber's van. Yup, the bitchy old lady on the corner.
