What is the significance of Mary Mulhern's victory?

I thought her manager was a bit arrogant in the news...
With his quotes about the democratic party..
Remind me never to vote for her again.
God giveth you the city council seat and god can taketh away just as quick.

In her defense, I believe Shawn's camp was the first to throw that stone.

He is right though in some ways. The November elections were a turning point for Democrats nationally. Mary's victory shows it on the local level and I think we will see a Democratic President in 2008.

City Council races are non-partisan for a reason. National politics have no place in the business of local government.

And let's face it. Shawn lost because he p*ssed off south Tampa and they voted him out for not wanting to pay for their storm water system. Had he kowtowed to their interest, he'd still be in office.

New Tampa just got sent a very strong message.

Think this race will have more impact on the direction of City Council than any other, given the huge difference in ideologies between Mulhern and Harrison. This is Linda Saul-Sena's council and Tampa will be better off as a result. Having Mulhern along gives her even more clout...Quality of life and environmental issues will become priorities, a good thing after 8 yrs of Mayor Greco and the most recent City Council.

AGREED, I THINK THIS WILL BE HUGE FOR SAUL-SENA. THERE IS NO DOUBT, SHE IS EYEING THE MAYORS OFFICE. WITH IORIO, TAMPA WILL SEE ITS DARKEST YEARS AHEAD. AS THE WORSE MAYOR IN TAMPA HISTORY, THE CITY WILL BE READY FOR A REFRESHING VISION---ENTER LINDA! SHE WILL BE A SHOE-IN AT THE NEXT ELECTION. LET'S JUST HOPE SHE SEES THE WASTE AND DEAD WEIGHT PAMELA HAS ADDED TO THE CITY PAYROLL. MY HUSBAND AND I FIGHT OVER POLITICS AT ALL LEVELS, BUT AT LEAST BOTH AGREE, PAM HAS GOT TO GO IF WE WANT TAMPA TO ADVANCE.

There was no reason.

I disagree, Pam's not the worst.
Dick Greco was the worst Mayor.
He was a Good Ole Boy's Mayor, you can't say that aabout Iorio.

I have to agree with teh earlier poster, Pam is bad. At least Greco actually tried to beautify the city. The highways were clean and mowed. Pam has not done anything to clean and beautify Tampa. While "people liking Pam" is "nice" it does not help our city function. I visited Tampagov.net, all of her proud accomplishement did nothing to make tampa a better place.

Sunday's Tampa Tribune had an editorial about Pam. In it, she was saying Tampa does not have money to build new roads. Yet, we have the money for a riverwalk park? This makes no since. Since Iorio took office, very little has changed. Code is a joke, taxes continue to spiral out of control to cover frivilous spending, more six figure salaries were added to her administration than in the history of Tampa leaders. Yet, what services have benefited us?

Where are our garbage bins, where is the completion of Giddens Park, Why does the house next to mine still look like a 3rd world shack? Why is crime increasing.

On the news this weekend, they had the Hillsborough County Sheriff announcing he would sue the owners of 4 apartment complexes in North Tampa due to the high crime, and calls for service in their complexes. Why can't the city of Tampa do the same. When the sex offender house had numerous calls for service, it was the residents of the n'hood that had to pull this data, take off work and go to Council to fight. Code said nothing could be done. In the mean time I have to have my children stay inside to feel safe.

How many code cases have affected the quality of life for our neighborhood, yet, the owners are not held accountable. Most, once they comply, do not spend one penny, yet the city spends thousands of dollars each year in gas for inspections, postage for notices and salaries for inspectors. If they are not going to follow thru, or accomplish compliance why don't they just disban the entire department and save us millions of dollars per year.

Here is one last thought. Curtis Lane and Bill Dorty make a combined salary of well over $200K per year!

After watching that video, I wish I hadn't voted for her.
