Transforming Burglars Bars

Many of the homes in Seminole Heights have burglar bars on the windows and doors, to keep people away from the inside of the home. As the homes get rehabbed or remodeled, the bars come down. So what to do with them?

Transform them into trellises, into things that are inviting.

1. Wire brush or sandpaper the rust of the bars. Do as good a job as you feel like it, after all this is only for the garden, not a museum.
2. Cut 2 x 2 pressure treated wood to height.
4. Connect the bars to the wood with angle brackets.
5. Plant the bars in the ground.
6. Paint everything black.
7. Plant vines
7. Months later when you finally find the right size and look, add the finials.

We made a fence in our back yard out of burglar bars. We left them rusty to give it that "vintage" look.

I'd love to see pics of the burglar bar fence. We're thinking of building a gazebo with ours...we have a lot of pieces!
