A Rival for Taco Bus?

From Jill, a reader ...

Los Tucanes Restaurant
1235 E Hillsborough Ave
813-232-5084

Los Tucanes, which recently was a different Mexican eatery, switched to new ownership last January and the food is vastly improved. The new owner makes homemade tortillas, fries his tortilla chips daily, and has some of the best salsa in the area. Highlights include whole tilapia and traditional barbacoa tacos where the meat manages to be rich without being greasy. Business is slow due to the reputation of the past owner, but it's a great time to give the restaurant a new chance to make a good impression.

From Sherry King (who is having issues posting):

We got take-out from Los Tucanes last night. A chicken burrito, chicken chimichanga, steak taco, with rice and beans plus some ensalada. The steak was a bit tough, but portions were good and the flavors were excellent. Especially good was the burrito, which was huge, and you have to eat with a fork. It was $6.50 per meal. And they have beer! Mexican music at a very loud volume kept us from staying to eat, but the dinng room is nice and roomy. We'll be back! We're used to doing the take-out thing with the Taco Bus when we go home to drink our own Corona's with our meal, so we'll do take-out from Los Tucanes as well (unless they drop the volume on the music, then we'd eat there).
