Sooo Good Southern BBQ - New SH Restaurant

Last night, I realized the little (previous) ice cream place on Hillsborough is now open! It's just barely east of the Taco Bus on the same side of the road.

I think "deeeee-licious" is pretty accurate! And the family running the take-out (only) windows was friendly and accomodating.

I'd put Sooo Good BBQ on par with Big John's on 40th St. Going head-to-head, I'd deduct 1 point from Sooo for no seating, but give them back 1 point for having brewed sweet tea and a tastier flavor of BBQ sauce. So in other words, it's a dead heat!

Try it out for yourself during their official Grand Opening, today through Sunday. Their menu is posted here, but they have all the basic: Sausage, Pork, Beef Brisket, Chicken Collard Greens, Sweet 'Tater Souffle, Grits with Tomato Gravy, etc. Soup, salads and desserts are also available.

The owner is Nathan Wade and I met a very nice guy (and manager of the place) named Harold.

I know what I am doing for dinner tonight. I've been waiting to try this place out. I heard that there was some kind of relationship between Sooo and Big John's, but I don't know the validity of that.

soooo happy to see this post!

i tried to go to merino's last night to pick up something tasty to eat while i watched a movie but they were closed for valentine's day, i guess... plan #2 was going to be los tucanes but as i passed soooo good bbq i was drawn in by it's bright newness.. and i'm a sucker for an independent..

and hot damn! that is some super fine bbq! not being a southern native i'm relatively bbq ignorant.. personally, the quality i desire the most is that the meat fall off the bone and then melt in my mouth.. and my pork ribs were outstanding...

do yourself a freakin' favor and check it out...

Tried out the new BBQ place, a very short walk from my house.
Had the brisket sandwich, a bit pricey but worth it - very good.
Many friendly family members, hope the place lasts.
I'll go back.

Wish I could share the joy. I found the place to be over priced and more than a little lacking. A smoked sausage sandwich with an extra side was $9. Reminded me of warmed through Johnsonville. I did love the sauce, though.

My experience was also not all I had hoped for. They are exceedingly friendly, but I thought the brisket and ribs were a bit tough and quite fatty---not as good as my past experiences at Big Johns. plus the sauce was overdone and nothing special. But maybe I caught them on a bad night. And the okra was good and the other sides sounded good too---so maybe they should add a veggie plate.

I've had three times and has gotten worst each time. I want to support new options in the neighborhood prices are too high for the quality. Ribs good, sausage okay, pulled pork is way too fatty, brisket is way too fatty and cut into cubes which I found odd. Sdes are good. Try BBQ stand at 22nd and Osborne (Ice Cream's). You can't beat the turkey legs there but they disappear fast on the weekends.

I'm with Mal. Holy Smokes doesn't have very good BBQ.

Proximity is another. A little too far to drive when my belly's loaded with food.

Wholy Smokes? How about wanting BBQ that doesn't give my family food poisoning?

I recently read about Sooo Good BBQ in the local newspaper, and I immediately made lunch plans to eat there. I took two co-workers with me. I had the rib tip plate, and I was extremely disappointed. In the few places where I could find meat on the bone, it was very dry and overcooked. I commute to the Tampa area for work and I'm not familar with the "hot spots" on where to eat. Needless to say, I'll continue my search ...
