I wish instead they would take all of the energy, time, money they are using in trying to tear down this Starbucks and use it instead to start a small business and thus help build the community.

Seminole Heights has no existing coffee houses. Before you scream at me, the Coffee Bean sells coffee, yes, but they are open only for breakfast/lunch and sell mostly food. It's more of a diner and isn't going to lose much business from a place that only sells drinks and cookies/danishes. If anything, Starbucks might increase local demand for up-market coffee which could increase demand at the Coffee Bean as well. (This effect has been noted in other cities--I'm not pulling this out of my rear-end.)
Aside from the reasonable protesters that just refuse to buy Starbucks, at least a few of the counter-culture crowd there felt physical vandalism like smashing windows was a cool thing to do. Starbucks had to hire security and put up plywood barricades to protect itself.
I suppose that's the biggest problem with the anarchy movement--you can never be sure your reasoned approach to protest won't be overshadowed by someone else's illegal, over-the-top reaction. The guy with the sign that says he won't shop at Starbucks ends up lumped in the same group as the guy with the poster glue, spray paint, brick, or bomb.
For the record, I drink about 3 cups of coffee a month on average and maybe 5 cups a year from Starbucks.

Shawn, you seem to have read the article differently than I did. i saw it as an analogy. (wheat paste on a sign is a lot different than bricks through windows by the way...). Starbucks has come to represent something in our society that many of you seem unable to understand. or unwilling to accept or relate to...or maybe you're just indifferent toward it. I aint knocking ya. It's a philosophical difference really.
Were you not phazed by the Seattle protests of '99? I think a lot you folks who've posted here dont "get" the wheatpaste art that was on the starbucks sign. A lot of people don't "get" Banksy or R. Crumb. You're the same people who would have had Basquiat arrested. We see the world differently. That's all. Get off them highhorses ya'll...Come ride this Pony!
