"This is affecting Suwanee from Hanna to Henry. If you live in the area please let your neighbors know that are affected. So far all I know is that they are doing a shutdown and if it will affect you they will hangtag your homes with a boil water notice. Regardless better safe than sorry so if you live on Suwanee from the streets noted above please drink bottled water and tell your neighbors to do the same! Celebrating the Seminole Heights Blogger

The Seminole Heights Blogger turns 48 this month and in his honor I'm sharing what I know of him with his readers.

David "Scott" Banghart was born into a traveling family. His father and grandfather were metallurgical engineers and wandered the globe from mine to mine. Scott was the only one of four siblings born in the U.S. He toddled through the weaning years in Germany where a brother and sister were born. His elementary education began in Chile where his youngest brother was added. It was there, in South America that the seeds of his future were planted. One day while touring Bolivia, he wandered off from his family. At the ripe old age of six, he located the nearest policeman, asked for directions to his hotel in fluent Spanish, and found his way back alone. He was a self sufficient child, tending his brothers and sister and helping his mother navigate when they were on the road.

Scott spent his pre adolescent years roaming the hills of San Francisco, California. Then, it was on to Florida, where his mother's family had a home on Clearwater Beach. He attended high school there and made lasting friends. While involved in a local church youth group, he became interested in social work. Volunteering with the couple who published the local beach newspaper sparked the flame of activism.

Next he traveled to the Philippines where his father was helping to develope a new copper smelting plant. The country was under martial law, ruled by Ferdinand Marcos. Scott spent six years in the university there, earning a BA in psychology, with minors in History, Theology, and English, along with 36 hours towards his master's degree. As part of the school's social immersion program, he visited the homes of poor rural farmers and poverty stricken areas in the cities. He left the Phillipines before the change of rule. Later his economics professor, Gloria Arroyo Macapagal became president.

He returned to the U.S. looking for work. His first job was as a cook at a Pizza Hut. He moved on to a position as Behavior Specialist at a program for mentally handicapped and mentally ill adults. While working there, he discovered that his bosses were siphoning money to pay their debts. He played the role of "deep throat", reporting the story to a newspaper reporter. The story was published and the program shut down, which of course meant, Scott was out of a job.
This didn't faze him. He simply moved on to what was next.

When we met in 1988, he was supervising a transitional program for drug and alcohol addicted newly released convicts. I was teaching at a horse farm and his sister was one of my students. We had a barn clean up day and Scott attended with his father, Dave, who was dying of lung cancer at the time. I will never forget that day, when in the heat of the summer his father worked alongside us, despite his illness. He was a remarkable man, admired by many. He put in hundreds of volunteer hours at the VA hospital while undergoing treatment, and died without complaint.

It took me two weeks to realize that Scott was my future husband. We married nine months later. For seventeen years I have been priviliged to know this man. He's introduced me to an entirely different world. Wherever we are, he finds the bits and pieces that make that place fascinating. He is comfortable with every type of person, accepting and adapting to cultural and behavioral differences. He's taught me a whole new level of compassion. Once we loaded a whole station wagon full of dairy family into our little economy car when we found them broke down on a country road. Another time, we found an old woman sitting by the side of the road in her pink quilted robe. She was in the final stages of alzheimer's. We drove her to the nearest police station. When she refused to go with the officer who came to get her, Scott stepped in. He held out his hands and the woman put both her hands in his and let him lead her inside. Last week he stood in the pouring rain as a large loose dog ran gleeful circles around him. His feet were in six inches of water. We had been on our way to pick up a nice hot pizza,when we saw the dog wandering on Hanna and Central. He finally opened the door to the truck and all 50 lbs or so of sopping wet dog jumped in and smiled at me.

Now, I will let you know some of his quirks. He loves most kinds of music, but can't carry a tune or remember the words to any song. He's competitive and tough to beat in most categories of Trivial Pursuit, but don't ask him a single sports question, because he doesn't have a clue. He can take photos of gruesome burns on victims as part of his job, but he can't handle seeing one of our dogs in pain. He laughs at his own jokes. He sometimes forgets where he's going by the time we pull out of the driveway. He's passionate about this neighborhood and the people in it.

Maybe Now Hot Donuts

"TAMPA - The "Hot Doughnuts Now" neon lights at three Tampa Bay area Krispy Kreme stores will remain dark.

Franchises in New Tampa, Carrollwood and Clearwater closed without notice July 3."


Maybe this will mean that the Sulphur Springs store will have regular hours for when its hot donuts are served. Right now it is hit or miss, mostly miss. That store is treated more as a factory than a retail store. They have trucks all over the parking lot making it difficult to buy the donuts and dangerous to leave, as the trucks block the view.

Community Columnists

The Tampa Tribune announced today it's new community columnists in the commentary section of today's paper. Staci Backauskas is the columnist who is from Seminole Heights. Yeah! Again we are represented.

There are several other columnists who noted their neighborhood as Tampa. Tampa is a City. Come on, let us know which neighborhoods in Tampa you are from.

Noisy Pacific Car Stereo

Saturday, at 6:30 pm when I was at the dog park at Giddens Park, I heard a loud obnoxious racket coming from Pacific Car Stereo. There delivery van and a private vehicle had their stereos up very loud.

The friend I was with, told me that when she was at the park for the July 8 dog party, the store or its customers had their stereos on loud then.

They need to be nailed for this both by code and police. The owner needs to be help responsible for what occurs on his property and especially by his employees. There is a noise ordinance. Perhaps we need a noise meter mounted there to insure compliance or face heavy fines. Also is there anything that can be done about the broken down vehicle in the back?

Next SESHCA Meeting

The speaker at the next Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association General Membership Meeting will be Tom Snelling, Deputy Director of Business & Housing Development. He will be spekaing about Building Permits, when you need one and when you don't, how to find information on line, and information about the Seminole Heights Overlay District.


The SESHCA General Membership meeting will be at July 18 at 7:00 P.M. (coffee and conversation to begin at 6:30 PM) Seminole Heights Baptist Church Fellowship Hall (Nebraska and Hillsborough).

Ella and the Dog Park

Yesterday was a very good day for our dog Ella. We went to the Giddens Park Dog Park twicve.

Tangential comments:
To answer someone's question we are not sure what kind of dog Ella is. The rescue group called her a catahoula leopard hound mix. As we walk around people said she looks like a pit/greyhound mix, a hyena (mostly kids), or a dingo. S.L. has said Ella reminds him of Santa's Little Helper.

Anyone have their own ideas?

I took Ella to the Giddens Park dog park around 9/9:30 AM yesterday. There were two others dogs there. Stella ( 4 month old boxer pup) and Morgan, some big black 10 month old dog. Also there were their owners (Rich from Ybor City) and (Dan and Darryl from Lowry Park area).

(It is interesting ot see how far away people come to use our dog park)

Ella had a blast playing with those dogs in an off leash area. She was able to use her running skills to full advantage. It was nice to see her get really tired.

Then last night at 6:30/&PM we met her buddy Duncan and her owner Ginny (OSH) for a play date. Duncan and Ella have played together before at Ginny's house.

They like to wrestle. In the dirt. It's a good thing neither dog is white or else they'd be grey.

Ella needs this kind of socialization so this was a very good experience. As a result of all of this activity, she slept in until 6:30, only getting up when we got up.

Space for Lease

Ft. total. 1100 Sq Ft is currently occupied by a CPA firm. That leaves 1100 that is available. Professional Garage Sales or At-home flea markets

Susan and I like to garage sale. Aside from picking up bargains, it is a great way to see all different parts of Seminole Heights. (and Sulphur Springs, Tampa Heights and Wellswood.)

Today we drove by the garage sale at 1209 E. Henry. You musy have seen the signs. They were all over the place. In fact it would appear they have been up for the last month or two. As we drove by I confirmed our suspicions. This is one of the professional garage sale guys. We have sen him before having been to his sales several times. He sells "art" and other items. Even has a bright yellow "art sale" sign. He seems to have garage sales all the time.

There use to be a guy who had professional garage sales on Mohawk, someplace between 12th and 15th. He had a shipping container out front and had lots of flea market items. I'd hate to be living next to him.

Although I am whining about these two guys, a couple of years ago, there was a really great year long (every saturday) estate sale at Elm and I-275. (Right next to I-275 - last house on north end of the street) Some guy bought a seamtress' house (is a male version of a seamtress called a seamster? - or is that a dock worker who unload bolts of cloth?) The place and the large garage and a shipping container was filled with bolt upon bolt of cloth, curtains and even some furniture.

Flora Revesz memorialized

Flora died at Powhattan and Florida in a car accident caused by car lots sight obstructions.

Seminole Heights Alumnus dies

According to the Times, W. DeHart Ayala died. He grew up in Seminole Heights and went to Hillsborough High School.

"Through the middle part of the 20th century, Mr. Ayala was one of Tampa's most prominent general contractors and developers of residential real estate. In the 1940s and 1950s, he helped develop Wellswood, which at the time was an extreme northern suburb of Tampa"
