A Day Without An Immigrant
So today is "A Day Without An Immigrant" Many immigrants legal and nondocumented are not going to work or shopping to the impact of the imigreant upon our society.
We could be heavilty impacted here in Seminole Heights. restaurants such as the Taco Bus and Los Tucanes. Chinese Restaurants such as Fried rice, King, China Garden and Hong Kong. Gas stations and convenience stores such as Al's Mini Mart. Abuelas Meat Market, Case De Carne and Mega Market. Caribbean Restaurant on 15th Steet. All the little motels. 2 Korean churches. We have a huge immigrant population that lives here or works here or shops here.
Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans's, Chinese, Pakistani, Indians, West Indians/Islanders, Haitians, Cubans, Iranians, Swedes, etc, etc, etc, etc,.

If these businesses have that many illegals working for them, they should stay closed and not reopen. Face it, working and not paying taxes, is a CRIME. No matter how heartfelt illegals sound.

What you are saying may be true, but it's only a small percentage of employers who do this. These employers are breaking the law, and should be held accountable as well.

I had lunch today at Crazy Buffet on Dale Mabry right near where the protests were going on, and am happy to report that apparently all their Mexican sushi makers, cooks, dishwashers, etc,. were on the job.
We need more workers and less protesters and those who support this shameless conduct.
Most imigrants aren't illegal. My partner is an immigrant. I think it's helpful to remember that distinction in this conversation. The majority of Americans, white, brown, yellow, or blue, support legal immigration.
I worked for a company in my late teens that hired illegal immigrant workers to cut roses in the greenhouses in central California. I remember them being paid in cash. So no taxes came out of their wages. I couldn't tell you if they were making minimum wages (or less) or not.
The children of illegal immigrants go to our schools. They use the nearby hospitals when they need to but the cost of their care is eventually covered entirely by or at least subsidized by tax-payers (which include legal immigrants.) They use emergency services and other public facilities that cost tax money to fund. Their impact on our economy is a mixed bag.
You would think an employer that withheld taxes for an illegal immigrant (read: no social security number) would be easy to discover and fine. I mean, if he's withholding, under what SSN are the taxes filed?
Every nation has an obligation to guard its borders. I don't think it's fair to paint the Federal government as racist or elitist if they are attempting to fulfill that duty. Obviously, how they go about it matters and as usual the politicians are spending more time looking tough for the voters than actually providing good workable solutions.
I'm not sure what the solution his here but as I look around my new office filled with programmers, I see that I'm outnumbered by legal immigrants from places like India, Bosnia, Germany, and Vietnam. We are richer as a nation for having these law-abiding citizens here.
We are certainly a nation of immigrants and I think that the continuation of immigration is important to our society.
However, our current immigration issue concerns only one country, Mexico. Mexico is essentially trying to take over immigration policy in this country. It would be better for them to fix their problems rather than export them. Studies have shown that most illegals don't come here because work is not available at home; they come here because they have more opportunity. This is because Mexico is run by the minority European-descent.
The majority "Mestizos", those of mixed native heritage, have very little chance to advance in their own country. Look at the faces of the people swimming the Rio Grande and then look at Vincente Fox and his colleagues.
The hypocrisy of the ruling Mexicans is apparent by looking at her two borders. They want the northern border to be open but they rule their southern border with an iron fist. Guatemalans caught on Mexican soil are summarily returned home after rough treatment in detention facilities.
A friend of mine works near Mexico City as a teacher. He's been there legally for over a decade, married to a Mexican, and he has no vote or rights.
The easy way to deal with this issue is to demand that Mexico open all her borders, both ways, like the way they want the US border. They should allow their Central American neighbors to come in and look for jobs and they should allow North Americans to live and work in Mexico without threat of government confiscation.
There is no "happy" solution to the immigration issue. Illegals do not have SS nos and they usually have no medical insurance, retirement, etc., etc. Yet we provide all that to them at no cost to them. Since they have no SS# they do not pay into SS disability and they do not have SS withheld nor do they pay taxes. If they were to pay their fair share (whatever that is) then I don't think we'd have the issue we're dealing with now.
My sister is a Neo-natal intensive care nurse in southern CA and she is inundated with the extremely ill children of illegal aliens. They are not allowed to turn anyone away. The illegal immigrants do not get pre-natal care (due to cost and lack of ins) so they often have ill children. You and I pay to take care of these sick children. The problem would be significantly less irritating if these people paid like the rest of us. But they don't - - we do.
We have a huge demand for immigrants. As was noted, we have a huge number of them right here in SH. Most of them are legal. Some are illegal. The problem is not immigrants and not Mexicans (my family immigrated here many generations ago as did almost everyone's) the problem is sucking off the system. How do we fix it?
I don't have a solution, but what we're doing now can['t keep on going.
Isn't one of the big things they want to accomplish is to legalize all illegal aliens that currently reside in the US?
In other words, make it possible for them to pay taxes?
I bet that most illegal aliens would rather pay taxes than live with constant uncertainty.
The issue we are faced with is not an issue with aliens but one of ILLEGAL aliens. I doubt that anyone on this blog has an issue with immigrants, especially since this country is built by and for immigrants. The plight that ILLEGAL immigrants suffer is one of choice. They chose to come to this country, they chose to do it outside the normal immigration process, yet now they want special treatment and a different set of rules. I am passionately PRO immigrant as long as they enter the country leagally. Let's not confuse the debate!
So we wish to send a message that if people can break the law and evade the authorities in large enough numbers for a long enough time that we will just forgive their trespasses with no penalty? I would think that it would be a slap in the face to anyone who has legitmately entered the country and gone through all the hoops to become a legal resident.
Although I do agree that the way to immigrate it to do it the legal way. That's what I did, after all. However, we do have to face the fact that there are currently millions of illegal aliens currently working/residing in the US who are, for the most part, good "citizens" (ohter than paying taxes). Making them legal is an easy way to solve the current problem, it might not be the best one though...
I'm all for giving each illegal alien a well defined path towards becoming a legal citizen. This path though must be governed by US laws and requirements, not by the demands of those that come here illegally.
I also feel that the employers of illegal aliens be treated much more harshly than the illegal aliens themselves.
Maybe we should treat illegals in the same manner their home country treats illegals. I'd bet that would slow the flow.........
