What do you do about boom box cars?

At times when I am sitting traffic, next to one of those obnoxious boom box cars, I think of this.

Top Gear - Jeremy Clarkson.

  1. Those cars are breaking the law, too... if they pull up next to a cop, they can get a ticket if the radio can be heard outside their car.

Like most traffic enforcement in Tampa Bay, there isn't any.

  2. So many kinds, where can we start?
we like them dumb and we like them smart.
I like the ones with the pretty eyes,
Well i like all kinds of guys.
Stop. What happened, how about the ones we especially like?
    Which ones?
You know the ones with the cars that go..
    I hear you..
    Hit it!

    {beat...............}
It was me and the posse with Bunny (D)
We were cruising in the Jags and the Lambourgini,
When low and behold there appeared a mirage,
He was hooking up a car in his daddy's garage.
We stopped short, did a double take,
He was looking so fly, I thought I wasn't awake.
He was obviously hooking up bass, I asume,
But then he turned a little button and the car went boom.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigra and Bunny and we like the boom.
We like the cars, the cars that go boom.
We're Tigra and Bunny and we like the boom.

We like them short, and we like them tall,
We like them one, and we like them all.
They're always adding speakers when they find the room,
Cuz they know we like the guys with the cars that go boom.
And see my boyfriend really knows where it's at,
He's got 50 inch woofers all along the back.
He makes a comment on going to my room,
But I'd rather stay out with his car that goes boom.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigra and Bunny and we like the boom.

Now if your car ain't got it, go out and get it,
We like the boom and don't you forget it.
So turn down the treble, and flaunt your bass,
So your car can be heard almost any place.
Cuz when you're in the street you can't go far,
Without hearing the boom pouring out your car.
So if your speaker's weak, then please turn it off,
Coz we like the cars that sound so tough.

We like the cars, the cars that go boom,
We're Tigra and Bunny and we like the boom.

    Everybody just beep your horn
Everybody just beep your horn if you hear us,
    Now clap!
    Hit it!
    Beep, beep beep beep beep!
    Come on everybody!
    Hey, hey hey hey hey!
    Beep, beep beep beep beep!

  3. If I blast some yuppie bullshit talk radio about how nice your house is or how much it's worth, would you be upset?

You know, the nazis took radios away from the jews too (haha).

    Embrace freedom.

  4. A recent study has shown that the larger the size of the bass and amp, the smaller the rooster.

Ha! I almost peed my pants a little.

  6. Many times I've wanted to appropriate a boom car for an hour or two and drive around the neighborhood blasting Flatt and Scruggs. Think about the irony.

But ya know, sometimes even approaching middle age one finds oneself in the position of just needing to rock the f*** out while in traffic. Now personally the type of music is dependent on my mood - could be Motorhead, could be Steve Earle (which gets me some funny looks when I roll up next to someone in a parking lot) - but thankfully my stock Toyota stereo usually keeps my loud music fix my own.

I'm half deaf from playing that loud demon rock'n'roll for 25 years and I usually have to turn my radio up kinda loud. Still, I just can't even begin to fathom how load it is inside the compressed space of a car with a stereo
that's more powerful than my guitar amp.

  7. how about gasing up your car next to a beater chevy caprice that's booming so hard you think their windows are gonna shatter...AND yours? plus the car shook so violently i think parts were about to fall off. when the windows of YOUR car or house shake b/c of someone else's radio..that's a bit much.

  8. In a passing car I don't mind so much, I'm down the road soon anyway. What really drives me crazy is the moron across the street who's spent the past few weeks installing 4 ft. tall speakers into the back of his beater green minivan. Apparently he's new at this because it's taken him and his buddy a long time to get it "tweaked". They have to keep testing it out so I get to spend a part of everyday listening to the bass and feeling my walls shake. At least he could play some decent music.
    Grrrrr.

  9. I agree with My3peas, go on down the road and for less than a min I have no problem but when folks are forced to listen for a long period of time, I'm opposed to that. It is quite irritating when your home windows are vibrating and you have to turn up the volume on your T.V. to hear it in your own living room. That is being excessive and rude to other folks around that have no choice in the matter.

I live in the neighborhood on the north side of Hillsborough Ave and there is a business on Hillsb. that sells custom wheels who also installs these boom box systems. They think nothing of pumping up the volume in the parking lot to hear many music tracks on and on which filters into the nearby neighborhood for all to be annoyed with. I understand it is their specialized type of business but I also feel it is unfair for folks to be forced to listen to this after 6:00 P.M. when you come home from working all day and want some semblance of piece in your own home. It's not like I can drive my house away down the block and be out of range in a min.
    Double Grrrrr.....

  10. I know that green minivan well. He takes long slow drives down our street and around the block and back again. It sort of ruins my quiet Sunday morning. It sounds like a dinosaur pounding the pavement.

  11. I have seen him parked at SE corner 11th and Louisiana.

  13. Yup, that seems to be where he spends most of his time. Not sure if he lives there, it's hard to keep track of who actually does. Off the subject does anyone know if there are any agencies that can address the fact that they leave their dogs chained up in the front yard a large portion of the day? It's pitiful, I hear the puppy yelping all the time. What kind of life is that.

  14. to the anon poster that lives north of Hillsborough - regarding the speaker shop - call the cops - there is a noise ordinance and you do have a right to peace and quite in your own home. Call the non-emer number and ask for them to come and have it turned down. It works.

  15. Anon 10:19; thanks for the info. I did call the non-emerg police dept before asking what was the policy so I'd know what to do the next time the boom-boom started up.

They said an officer would need to have a noise devise with them when going out to the business so they could measure the decibels to determine if the noise level violated the ordinance set amount - whatever that target number is I don't know. Loud?

I was told there are approx five of these measurement devises in the city and when I called on a complaint; if a cop in the vicinity had one in their patrol car and available to take the call, then something would happen.
Sounded to me like I had to have luck on my side for everything to come together at just the right moment. That being; the boom-boom would have to start, I'd make the call to cops, dispatcher would put out call to any cops in area who could respond who had the devise with them, and then hope the boom-boom would not stop until a copy actually showed up. Chances of all those events happening in the correct and timely order probably wouldn't occur. I don't play the Lotto either, not very lucky.

I have taken matters into my own by calling the business myself and complaining which has had mixed results. Sometimes the manager or employee has sympathy and apologizes then the sound is turned down or off shortly after. Other times I get a rude response and hung up on with no results for about 10-15 min more before piece. I'm sure they are aware of the annoyance to the immediate area and know just how far and how long they can keep the noise going, just long enough so the cops don't show up with or without their little noise level devises to prove the case.
It's nothing more than a Cat & Mouse Game. Triple Grrrr.....
