This was the original Seminole Heights blog with commentary about life in and around the urban neighborhood of Seminole Heights in Tampa, Florida. Musings about other topics as my mood permits. The blog is essentially inactive since I moved to Lutz. Go to The Official Unofficial Seminole Heights Blog - www.seminoleheightsblog.com for active content.

The castle of Seminole Heights
Drive up Nebraska and just before you get to Chelsea, look over to your left, behind El Sid's sandwich shop, you will notice what appears to be a Bavarian castle undergoing construction. A second story renovation, (I think) to the residential property behind El Sid's. I'm not sure if it will be apartments or a residence expansion, or maybe offices. I believe the lock and keyshop and El Sid's owner, owns the place.
Guess I thought they would need some kind of varriance or such to build something so tight and towering over their neighbors. Either they did not, or we were all sleeping when they did!
ReplyDeleteI just know it is kind of out of character sizewize,,,,,,,,,,,tho impressive!
I drove by today, and I'm not sure that it's a 3 story addition. A good friend of mine is adding a second story to his house a few blocks away from there and has similar height on his. The historic overlay guidelines call for a pretty steep roof pitch, which in the narrow confines means a rather high peak.
ReplyDeleteThe strand board is probably just sheathing and will probably be covered with the same 6 inch siding that's on the rest of the house. (I hope).
As far as I can see, everything is on the up and up as far as code and historic guidelines go. Although the 3 peaks is a little strange for the architecture. My bet is that it's going to look pretty good when finished.
I believe (from what I've read - can't find a hard number on this, if anyone can help me out here) that there must be a 20 foot setback from the back of the property line to the back of the house. This can make building "out" a problem.
ReplyDeleteDunno.
