Praise Cathedral?

"My husband and I were just wondering about what appears to be an old theatre on Florida Ave. south of Hillsborough. It looks like a church utilized the building at one time....? Does anyone know if it's still a church -- ultimately, we're thinking it would be cool as a movie theatre, something we definitely need in Seminole Heights! We lived in Pacific Grove, CA a few years back and they had a very small local movie theatre downtown, in a revived old theatre building. It was pretty low-budget, sometimes the movies were less-than-current, but it was such a great place for the community. Any investors, developers out there listening?"

  1. You know back in Newtown, PA we had the same sort of hometown theatre that kept itself open. It only showed one movie but it was a much moe comfortable experience than the giant megaplexes of today. It would be a great idea for the neighborhood and if I am correct it is right near the new Cappy's Pizza?

  2. I have spoken to the current pastor about redevelopment and this is the last property that she owns from her father the prior minister of the church. She had NO, NO, NO intent to sell.

In theory a local theater would be nice but in reality - the parking is not sufficient (i've checked) and we are not a walkable commuity so it would not work.

  3. It is the old Seminole Movie Theater. My mother used to see movies there when she was growing up. There was another old movie theater at the corner of MLK and Nebraska where the new location of Advance Auto Parts is located. If you are interested in older theaters, there is the Tampa Theater in downtown Tampa located on Franklin Street between Zack and Polk Streets.

  4. No investors here in Seminole Heights. We like to chase big business out, and bring in more used car lots.

Now imagine that same old theatre building. With a fresh coat of paint, all fixed up...... With tons of used cars, inside and out! YEAH!!!!

  5. I just read that Hyde park is kicking out there theater that does the independent films. How cool would it be to get them up here. They said that ticket sales were going up and they were doing well!

  6. there is not enough parking available for a theater at this location and the current owner - Praise - does not want to use the space for this use.

  7. This building could to used as a local community center with space for clubs, art shows and yes movies in the old theatre, with the old signage out front it would be a neighborhood landmark. This is also a situation where the city should step in and seize the building from a owner who is in code violation and not even keeping the building up to basic safety levels.

  9. Visit the library's web site (hcplc), click catalogs, click Burgert Brother this collection offers photos from 1880-1960, type in keywords:movie theatres, seminole heights, Florida Ave. etc, click on HTTP address for photo to come up. The theatre that was on Nebraska @ MLK was the Northside. Everyone who is tired of used car lots and tow storage, join the Business guild (www.B'Gosh) jump on a committee and help us change the way our neighborhood looks.

  10. Honestly, look at the handful of introverts that want the neighborhood to stay status quo. The sad part is the city sympathizes with these few and makes the true workers and tax payers suffer for their cause.

  11. The area would not either move or stay on it's own. It takes the community to determine the direction. If no one acted in any way, the area would simply slide downward and dissappear. Can't see that is a positive thing. And I suggest it is far more than a handful who care. More like a handfull of disgruntled people with no pride who love status quo because it is lazy.
