Ouch!

Seminole Heights resident Trina Koch gets a big oowwie at Bayshore.

"Almost a year ago, Koch rode her bicycle along Bayshore Boulevard Linear Park, the 4.5-mile sidewalk that stretches along Old Tampa Bay south of downtown.

She was attempting to pass an inline skater, a young woman who suddenly stopped, turned and stepped left, right into the bicycle's path.

Koch swerved off the sidewalk, crashing in the grass. She cut open her shin on her own bike.

Not a banner day for the physical therapist, who lives in Seminole Heights. Even her bike was traumatized, requiring more than $200 in repairs."

Be careful if you exercise on Bayshore

  2. I ride Bayshore daily. You're right. Most people don't obey the rules of the road like pass on the left like you would in a car, stay to the right unless passing, announce when overtaking someone, etc. There is a bike lane going North from Gandy to the curve, but none going South. Going South is VERY dangerous for various reasons. First - you're right next to a moving car, second - there are culverts and other things to dodge on the road while at the same time trying not to get hit by the car mirror next to you because the driver doesn't know about or care about the hazards on the road we face. Depending on how brave I feel, I'll ride South on Bayshore and take my chances. But I know it's only a matter of time...
